Working with Others
A principal is the primary owner, officer, or controlling individual of a business. In the context of NYC home improvement contracting, a principal is the person legally responsible for the company’s operations, compliance, and conduct.
This includes anyone who:
Owns a significant share of the business
Has authority to make major decisions
Controls daily operations
Signs DCWP licensing documents
Is accountable for violations, fines, or misconduct
When you apply for a DCWP Home Improvement Contractor license, every principal must be disclosed. DCWP holds principals personally responsible for ensuring the business follows city laws, uses compliant contracts, maintains proper insurance, and avoids unlicensed activity.
